Domino - severe arthritis at 14 years of age

Dominio

14 year old, 22 pound Domino was one of a trio of dogs that came from a home where they were neglected. Domino lost his daddy to cancer and needed a new place to be safe when he left him. Domino is in our PAWS-N-HANDS Program due to severe arthritis and other issues which means he is not able to be moved to a new home. His expenses each month are about $50.00. Domino is being fostered in Silver Lake Wisconsin. Please donate to Domino.

Mario - cancer

Fluffy

Mario is 10 years old.  He had surgery in September 2008 to remove bladder stones and a 'strange mass' in his intestines.  He ended up having a portion of his intestines removed.  The mass was found to be intestinal cancer.  However, Mario felt great after surgery and doesn't realize how sick he really is.  He had an ultrasound in December and no growth was noted in his intestines, but possible growth in his bladder.  He was put on oral chemotherapy and other medications.  He will need complete bloodwork done monthly to make sure the chemotherapy does not go into his bone marrow and will need ultrasounds every 4-6 weeks to monitor his progress.  His expenses will run approximately $500 per month.  Please donate to Mario's medical bills to help him continue to 'feel' well.

Lily - almost euthanized because of age/health

Lilly1 Lilly, a Maltese mix, weighing in at only 8 pounds, was pulled from a local shelter in the Chicagoland area, where she was slated to be euthanized due to her age and ill health.  The vet quickly determined that she had a heart murmur, mammary tumors, a bladder infection, compromised liver function, blind in one eye, fused discs in her spine and a mouth full of rotten gums and teeth.  Whew!  The vet put her on antibiotics for a full ten days before she would do the dental.  Luckily, this also helped Miss Lilly with her bladder infection.  She came through her dental very well, although losing most of her teeth, but that evening she suffered several small seizures that the vet attributed to the anesthesia.  Because of her age (13+) and her adverse reaction to the anesthesia, it was decided to not remove the mammary tumors and let Lilly live out her life in her foster home. Now, two months later, Lilly is happy and full of mischief.  The good news, the heart murmur seems to have disappeared.    The bad news, due to her fused discs and arthritis, many mornings Lilly has trouble getting out of bed, but with the help of her medication, by afternoon, she is her old self again - full of spit and vinegar. Lilly is also on a special diet to help improve her liver function.  Interestingly, whenever a new, younger foster is brought into the household, Lilly is right there grooming and licking and nestling in with the new foster, welcoming them to their new and improved life.  Won’t you help Lilly do her work by helping to offset the cost of her pain meds and special dietary needs?  Thank you.

Maya - emaciated stray

Maya Maya is an adult ST/Terrier mix who was rescued in Kentucky. She was emaciated and was full of worms. She was brought to New Beginnings and was also found to have a diaphragmatic hernia, which results in her intestines migrating into her chest, causing her breathing to be labored. Maya will need surgery to correct this problem. The estimate on the cost of her surgery is $2000 to $2400. She will see the specialist on 6/26/08 for her surgical consultation. She will then be on her way to recovery. Maya will be an excellent family dog. She is sweet and very affectionate. She is already housetrained and would love to have a forever family of her own.

Ida Marie - Attacked and Injured by a Large Dog

Little_ida_marie_idie_007 Ida Marie was attacked by a large dog and then rescued by a loving couple in the Dallas Texas area.  She was with them from the attack date in May and then confined to her crate to heal.  Then she came in season so had to be watched and confined even longer.  Her name was Little Girl but I renamed her Ida Marie after a wonderful great auntie of mine who fought the battle of crippling arthritis for 50 of  70 years on this earth.

According to my vet, Idie has feeling in both legs and with daily therapy at home and a once weekly sessions involving adjustments, laser therapy and physical therapy she will be able to walk again.
Her sessions will cost around $37 a week,  and I am be doing the home therapy.  Dr. Linda also suggested water therapy, so Idie and I are shopping for a hot tub hoping to help my physical ailments and hers at the same time.  LOL  So far $350  or thereabouts has been raised for her care.  I am hoping to add to that tally very soon.
Idie proved her willingness to walk again this afternoon.  Apparently my persistence is working.  She raised her butt and drag-walked almost six feet using all four legs.  I nearly fainted.  Lots of prayers and praising going on at the Havn Hus.

Celina - found in a barn in Ohio

Celina2  Celina came into rescue on 6/15 after being found in rural Ohio huddled in a barn covered with mud and some blood (although no visible injury was ever found). She was underweight at 7.7 pounds. On 6/23, Celina went to see the vet and was discovered to have an ulcerated right eye, and she was given eye meds to treat her eye. When she underwent her dental procedure on 7/1, the vet re-evaluated her ulcerated eye. The eye was not worse but certainly was not getting better despite the eye meds. The vet found a pocket of blood in the core of the eye ulcer which was of concern and a grid keratectomy was performed to aid in healing and a tarsorphy (stitching the third eyelid closed) to assist in healing. On 7/5, Celina was in for removal of the sutures from the tarsorphy and recheck of the eye. The ulcer is not as deep as it was and is to continue on her eye meds.
On 7/12, Celina trekked to the annual volunteer rescue picnic in southern Wisconsin and to meet her long-term foster mom. On 7/14, Celina was in for a recheck with her foster mom’s vet in Western Wisconsin. The ulcer is improving and has good vascularization but will need another recheck. Her weight is up to 8.2 pounds.  On 7/24, Celina got good news that her eye was healed 95% with just a 2 mm line of ulcer remaining. Her weight was also up to 9 pounds. The vet recommended another 10 days of treatment and then being able to discontinue her eye meds and wearing the e-collar.
On 8/12, Celina was back to the vet, and unfortunately, her ulcer is back! It’s a full circle in size but smaller than the first ulcer. She was put back on medications and an anti-inflammatory due to some corneal edema. She will be back to the vet in a week for another recheck.

On 8/19, Celina went to the vet for a recheck and the ulcer is down to pinpoint in size and there is good vascularization.  She'll be back for another recheck in 10 days.  Her weight is holding steady at 9 pounds.

Punkin - packed in a chicken crate at Amish puppy mill auction

Punkin1 Punkin34

Punkin was purchased from an Amish Swap Meet where he was being sold as a breeder stud.  He & 5 other dogs were crammed into a chicken crate.  The lady, who purchased Punkin, wanted him for a pet & thought she was saving him, until she realized that he had multiple, severe health issues she was unable to afford.  Punkin was surrendered to NBSTR on 2-10-07.  Evaluation by the Vet & a Cardiologist, revealed that Punkin has severe, inoperable heart disease.  Punkin also has severely deformed hind legs, inoperable because of his heart, which resulted from miller neglect.
Punkin has the soul and spirit of a giant and gives no attention to his infirmities.  When trying to walk on all 4's become laborous for him, he walks on his front paws with his tail in the air like a little circus performer.  He is a little love bug, who charms all he meets.  He is wary of strangers, and at a whopping 4 pounds, performs like a giant watch dog & protector when strangers enter his world.
Punkin will live out whatever time we are granted with him in his foster home in OH, where the sun rises and sets on him.
