6 year old Jackson came to NBSTR from an Arkansas puppy mill in December, 2007. When he arrived, he was almost completely matted and had nails over an inch long. He had eye infections there were so severe that one eye is scarred, resulting in partial blindness in that eye. Severe ear infections also resulted in partial loss of hearing. Jackson had lost a number of teeth already, and those that were left were infected, and some were broken. The vet stated that the broken teeth were from him chewing on the bars of his cage. After his dental, he was left with 8 teeth: 6 on top, 2 on the bottom. He was emaciated, was a good six pounds under weight, and had very poor muscle tone. Jackson was also diagnosed with a Grade 4 heart murmur, is severely bow-legged, and to top it all off, he has been de-barked and is unable to make any noise. Jackson's initial vet bills were $2500.
His foster dad, Daniel Darnieder, reports that after a lot of tender loving care, Jackson has regained most of his weight. "In spite of all this, he is the sweetest, easy going, loving, and life-loving dog I have ever had. Due to Jackson's heart murmur, he will be on medication for the remainder of his life at the cost of $100 per month.
